Best tools to grow your Substack in 2026

Updated 2026-10-18 · Every tool and price below was checked on the vendor's site · 30 tools

Substack gives you a lot out of the box: hosting, email, payments, recommendations and Notes. So the question isn't "what do I need?" but "what fills the gaps that limit my growth?" This guide walks through those gaps in the order most writers hit them, recommends specific tools for each, and is upfront about the trade-offs.

The short version: start free (Google Analytics, Canva, Grammarly, Notion). Join a recommendation network early (SparkLoop). Treat Notes as your main discovery channel and measure which Notes convert (Subshack is free, WriteStack is the full suite). Add revenue analytics (Byline OS) once paid subscribers matter.

1. Start with the free basics

Before paying for anything, set up the free foundations. They cover most of what a new publication needs.

  • Google Analytics: Free and worth connecting on day one for referral sources. Overkill for most writers beyond the acquisition reports. Pricing: Free.
  • Canva: The default design tool for newsletter writers. The free plan covers most needs. Pricing: Free; Pro US$144/yr for one person (before tax).
  • Grammarly: The free browser extension is worth installing. Pro's rewrites can flatten your voice, so accept suggestions selectively. Pricing: Free; Pro from $12/mo.
  • Hemingway Editor: The free web version does the core job (highlighting long and passive sentences). Most writers don't need Plus. Pricing: Free web editor; Editor Plus from $8.33/mo billed annually ($100/yr).
  • Notion: The most flexible planning hub for newsletter writers. The free plan covers solo use. Pricing: Free; Plus $10/seat/mo.
  • Unsplash: The go-to free photo library. Popular images show up everywhere, so crop or edit them to stand out. Pricing: Free to use under the Unsplash License.

2. Get subscribers from other newsletters

Recommendations are one of the most reliable growth channels for newsletters. If you also have a personal site, make the signup form there worth using.

  • SparkLoop: The best-known newsletter recommendation network. Earning from recommendations is low-risk; paying for referrals only makes sense once you know what a subscriber is worth to you. Pricing: Free to join the Partner Network and Upscribe recommendation widget (SparkLoop takes a share of paid-recommendation earnings). Paying other newsletters to recommend you is a separate paid program.
  • Supascribe: Fills a real gap: Substack's native embed is fixed-width and unstyled. Independent (not affiliated with Substack), and only useful if you drive traffic from a site you control. Pricing: Free for your first 100 subscribers captured and 1,000 embed views; a paid Pro plan after that (usage add-ons beyond plan limits).

3. Win on Substack Notes

Notes is where Substack readers discover new writers. Substack now schedules single Notes natively; the tools below add batch queues, cross-posting and, most importantly, attribution: which Notes actually bring subscribers.

  • Buffer: Reliable and affordable, and its free plan includes Substack Notes scheduling. The best default if you post to several networks. Pricing: Free (up to 3 channels); Essentials $5/channel/mo billed yearly ($6 monthly).
  • WriteStack: The most complete Substack-only Notes suite. Pricey for a beginner, and publishing runs through a Chromium browser extension acting in your logged-in session. Pricing: Hobbyist $23.99/mo, Standard $32.99/mo, Enterprise $99.99/mo; 7-day free trial.
  • Narrareach: Good if distribution beyond Substack is your bottleneck. Hands Notes to Substack's native scheduler rather than posting from a stored session. Pricing: From $19.99/mo ($199/yr); higher tiers $39/mo and $89/mo (discounted yearly).
  • StackSweller: Does one job (a Notes queue that runs with your laptop closed). Be aware it works by holding your Substack session, and Substack now schedules single Notes natively. Pricing: Pro $39/mo, or $25/mo billed yearly ($250/yr).
  • Subshack: A free, measurement-first browser extension that never posts for you. New and small, so expect rough edges. Pricing: Free (Subshack 1.0), including a no-signup public profile audit.

4. Cross-post where your readers already are

Pick one or two networks where your audience lives and repurpose each post there, rather than spreading yourself across all of them.

  • Typefully: A polished writing-first scheduler with Substack Notes support. The free plan is enough to test it. Pricing: Free (10 posts/mo); Creator $99/yr; Business $20 per social set/mo.
  • Taplio: Effective for LinkedIn but expensive. Only worth it if LinkedIn is a primary acquisition channel. Pricing: Starter $39/mo; Growth $69/mo; Pro $199/mo; 7-day free trial.
  • Hypefury: Strong automation for X-heavy writers. Less relevant if X isn't where your readers are. Pricing: From $6/mo (1 channel) to $19/mo (all channels); 7-day free trial.
  • Repurpose.io: Saves real time if you make video or audio. Pure text writers don't need it. Pricing: Starter $35/mo; Pro $79/mo; Agency $179/mo (cheaper yearly); 14-day free trial.

5. Measure what converts to paid

Opens and likes aren't revenue. Once you have paid subscribers, track which posts drive upgrades and where churn comes from.

  • Byline OS: Promising revenue-first analytics built specifically for Substack. It is a beta product; live sync uses your Substack session cookie and undocumented internal APIs, so the CSV-upload mode is the safer start. Pricing: Starter free (CSV import, 30-day retention); Growth $19/mo; Scale $49/mo. 14-day trial. Currently in private beta.
  • Subshack: A free, measurement-first browser extension that never posts for you. New and small, so expect rough edges. Pricing: Free (Subshack 1.0), including a no-signup public profile audit.
  • Bitly: Handy for knowing which channel sends readers. The free tier is limited; many writers can get by with UTM tags plus Google Analytics. Pricing: Free (with ads); Core $10/mo (annual only); Growth $29/mo; Premium $199/mo (annual pricing).
  • Plausible: Excellent lightweight analytics, but you can't install it on a substack.com publication. Use it on a personal site that funnels readers to Substack. Pricing: From $9/mo (Starter, 10k monthly pageviews); Growth $14/mo; Business $19/mo. Free trial.

6. Add audio and video

Substack supports podcasts and video. Audio versions and short clips can reach people who won't read a 2,000-word post.

  • Descript: The easiest way for writers to edit audio and video. A natural fit for Substack podcasts. Pricing: Free; Hobbyist $16/mo billed annually ($24 monthly); Creator $24/mo annually ($35 monthly).
  • ElevenLabs: Best-in-class AI voice. Tell listeners when a voice is synthetic. Pricing: Free (10k credits/mo); Starter $6/mo; Creator $22/mo; higher tiers available.
  • Riverside: Records each guest locally, so remote interviews sound studio-grade. Ideal for interview-driven newsletters. Pricing: Free; Pro $24/mo billed annually ($288/yr).
  • OpusClip: Fast way to get shorts from long recordings. Review the AI's clip choices before posting. Pricing: Free (60 credits/mo); Starter $15/mo; Pro $14.50/mo billed annually.
  • Adobe Podcast: Enhance Speech is impressive on the free tier. Check Adobe's current plans before relying on premium features. Pricing: Free tier; premium features require a paid Adobe plan (check site for current offer).

7. Earn beyond subscriptions

Sponsorships, digital products and tips can out-earn paid subscriptions for some niches, and they don't put your writing behind a paywall.

  • Hecto: A straightforward sponsorship marketplace. Listing is easy, but demand varies by niche. Pricing: Marketplace; creators list ad packages with upfront prices (platform pricing on its site).
  • Swapstack: One of the original newsletter sponsorship marketplaces. Worth a free signup to see what deals match your niche. Pricing: Pricing not listed on the homepage.
  • Paved: A large newsletter ad network. Advertisers want audience size and data, so it suits writers with a sizable list. Pricing: Not publicly listed for publishers (advertiser budgets from under $1,000).
  • Gumroad: The simplest way to sell a digital product to your readers. Fees are high per sale but there's no fixed cost. Pricing: No monthly fee; 10% + $0.50 per transaction on direct sales.
  • Ko-fi: A low-friction tip jar that complements paid subscriptions. Pricing: Free with a 5% platform fee on some features; Ko-fi Gold $12/mo for 0% platform fee.

A word on browser extensions and your Substack login

Substack has no official public API for most of this, so many Substack-specific tools work through a browser extension or by holding your logged-in Substack session. That's how tools like WriteStack, StackSweller, Subshack and Byline OS's live sync function. It's common and often fine, but read each tool's privacy page, prefer read-only or CSV modes when they exist, and be wary of anything that auto-follows, auto-likes or messages people for you.
