Checked 2026-10-22 on the vendors' sites and Substack's help center · Independent, no affiliate relationship with either tool

The short answer: Pick Substack Insights if you just want to see which posts and Notes work and when to publish: it's free under 1,000 subscribers and $9.99 one-time above that, and it only reads your data. Pick NoteStack if Notes are your main growth channel and you also want subscriber-conversion rankings, a scheduler and optional AI drafting, from $8/mo.

Start with what Substack already shows you

Before installing anything, open a recent Note and click View stats: Substack now shows the new free and paid subscribers, followers, clicks and shares each Note produced. Both extensions are most useful once you have enough Notes and posts that patterns are hard to see one at a time.

Read-only vs a full Notes suite

Substack Insights only reads. It ranks your posts and Notes, tells you when you tend to get the most engagement, and hands you a CSV to analyze. NoteStack does that for Notes and goes further: it schedules and publishes Notes for you, researches other profiles and offers AI drafting. More features also means more access: anything that publishes on your behalf acts inside your logged-in Substack session.

About AI-drafted Notes

Readers follow you for your voice. NoteStack is upfront that its Ghostwriter sends your past Notes to its AI provider to learn your style, and that it never posts AI drafts automatically. If you use it, treat drafts as prompts to rewrite, not posts to publish.

Our pick

For most writers, Substack Insights: it answers the main questions (what works, when to post) for free or a one-time $9.99, without posting anything. Choose NoteStack if you post Notes daily and want analytics and a scheduler in one place, and remember that Substack's own Notes scheduler is free if scheduling is all you need.

Our verdicts

  • Substack Insights: A simple, inexpensive Chrome side panel that ranks your posts and Notes and exports a CSV with ready-made AI prompts. Analysis runs in your browser using your logged-in Substack session; it only reads, never posts. Small and new (v1.0 on the Chrome Web Store).
  • NoteStack: A lot of Notes analytics for the price, with data kept in your browser. Be aware the scheduler auto-publishes through your logged-in Substack session, and the AI features send your Notes text to its server and Anthropic. Skip the Ghostwriter if your voice is the product.
